Drug Related Emergency Room Visits – Cannabis in Top 3

In 2022, the top three classes of drugs causing trips to the emergency rooms (ER) for people were alcohol, opioids, and cannabis. Males between the ages of 18 – 25 years were leading patient groups. These are some of the findings released in the Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN), for drug-related emergency room visits for 2022.

In the 2021 DAWN report, cannabis was ranked forth as top drugs involved in ER visits, behind alcohol, opioids, methamphetamine and ahead of cocaine. In the 2022 report, cannabis has moved up to the number three substance responsible for drug-related ER visits.

The DAWN report is an annual report that focuses on national ER data associated to drug-related admissions. It is produced by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
