Teens who use cannabis are at a greater risk for poor academic performance, such as being absent from school, or dropping out of school. This new study released October 7, 2024, in JAMA pediatrics, also suggests that cannabis use during adolescence can lower grades, decrease later enrollment into universities and potentially impact unemployment rates after graduation.
The authors of this study, Chan, O. (et.al.) reviewed 63 observational individual studies representing 438,329 individuals to achieve their findings. This study supports previous works, where cannabis use, during adolescent years, can adversely impact academic success at different levels. The authors call for more research into this area to assist in the creation of policies and interventions to offset harms from adolescent cannabis use.
